As we're about to get into a new year, I thought I'd put out some of the highlights and lowlights from this past year.

Highlights

  • Getting steady work in voiceover. It's been real hit and miss over the years of doing voicework on the side but as I've been able to get my teeth sunk deeper into the business, I've seen growth. And, growth, is good.
  • The kids going back to school. Before August of 2022, my kids hadn't been 'to' school since 2019, before COVID. As anyone who's read my posts on this blog know, we've kept them virtual as long as we could so as not to expose our youngest, Mabel, to COVID as she is more immuno-vulnerable. It goes without saying that her Mom and I were were very scared to put them back into rooms and hallways filled with potential virus-spreaders. Though no COVID yet for anyone (knock on wood) they HAVE gotten a bit of flu bug or cold here and there. Luckily nothing too serious. Again, knocking on wood.
  • Jodie flourshing at her stay-at-home job. She's the main bread-winner for our househould and we are all super-appreciative that she was able to step up and do a work from home job that challenges her and allows here to use her brain, while STILL being able to do Mabel's hair before school! She's a trooper and love her for working so hard at her job and as a Mom (sometimes simultaneously!)
  • Going out in public. Much like the kids going to school, we weren't going into any stores or restaurants for fear of the COVID. The irony now is we find ourselves more afraid of the flu, RSV and COVID #Tripledemic than just the COVID anymore. That said, I was able to go to a friend's birthday get together at a restaurant, Jodie was able to go into a couple stores and we all just generally feel more at ease (with mask anyway) with going out to public places. There was a time when there was ZERO chance we would go into a Home Depot or even grab the mail without thoroughly steaming it first (no, REALLY!)
  • I started writing a book about my Dad. See below. It's reawakened my love of writing. A love I didn't know I had until I wrote for a major video game.
  • Becoming more connected with a few family members. Though we're not 'super-buds' I feel like my brother and I have become closer in 2022. I talk with my cousin more since at least 2020.

The lowlights

  • We all got some form of the flu. I was in bed going in and out of consciousness with a fever and achiness for 2 days before slowly emerging from my flu-coma. Jodie was out for a little over a day, both Evey and Mabel missed school for about a week each. And with these you get better but you're still dealing with a cough or something for a week or two after. Sucks. It seems Mabel, fortunately, got it the least out of all of us so that's good. Time for Jodie and I to get our flu shots, I guess.
  • Dad continues to decline. He's been battling Alzheimer's for a few years now but there's been a steady decline in his cognitive skills over 2022. It's hard to get any intelligible words out of him anymore and he's showing diminishing normal skills like not being able to contain drool from dripping out of his mouth. But as I mentioned above, I started writing a book about Dad. It's not just about his battle with Alzheimer's but an intimate look at a truly unique person who defied stereotypes of what a military man and father should be. I look forward to finishing it. Been a labor of love so far.

That's about it though. All-in-all I'd say it's been a pretty good year. I hope yours has been equally, if not more, full of highlights and here's to a 2023 that's both bountiful and healthy. Let me know in the comments some highlights from your 2022! Cheers, Moose
